Robert "Sonny" Roetter Obituary

Robert Lee “Sonny” Roetter, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 7, 2024

at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He was born on January 28, 1935 in

West Milton, OH. He attended Milton-Union High School prior to enlisting in the Marines.

After being medically discharged, he met and married Ruth Ellen Dunn on July 7, 1962, at

the Greene Street United Methodist Church in Piqua, OH. As Ruth was a teacher, she was

invested in his learning and encouraged him to earn his GED which he did a few years into

their marriage. He worked as a machinist at Hobart for more than 30 years. He then shifted

to a hiker role at Enterprise which afforded him the opportunity to traverse much of the

Midwest and East Coast driving cars to various dealerships and rental locations.

Robert was an avid deer hunter and went on numerous hunting trips with family and friends.

He also enjoyed collecting Franklin Mint diecast cars and had an entire room dedicated to

them at his and Ruth’s home in Pleasant Hill, OH. Robert was a longtime member of the

West Milton Masonic Lodge #577, and a 32nd Degree Mason.

In July 2021 he moved from Pleasant Hill to Indianapolis, IN. For the last couple years at his

Assisted Living Home (Traditions at North Willow) he became the beloved “Sheriff” and could

be found sitting by the reception desk greeting folks with a friendly “How are ya?” as they

walked by.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Roetter, his parents Robert L

Roetter, Sr., and Minnie (Boyer) Helman, sister Norma Kelly, sister-in-law E. Lucille Jay, and

brothers-in-law Edwin Jay and Harold Brill. He is survived by his sisters Margaret Hoover of

Clearwater, FL and Linda Haley of Dayton, OH, sister-in-law Thelma Brill of Indianapolis, IN,

as well as several nieces, nephews, great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
