Gary L. Johnston

Age 85, of Pleasant Hill, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2024, at his home. He was born January 21, 1939, in Richmond, Indiana, to his parents John R. & Mary E. (Deaton) Johnston. Gary graduated from Newton High School class of 1957 and earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from General Motors Institute. On November 9, 1956, he married Colleen R. Bowman and together they shared a life for over 67 years. Gary worked at General Motors as a mechanical design engineer where he was inducted into the Inventor’s Hall of Fame for holding over 100 patents. He retired from General Motors after over 40 years of employment. Being involved in the Pleasant Hill community was a big part of Gary’s life. He served as mayor of Pleasant Hill for over 16 years, served on the Board of Public Affairs for over 20 years, and served on the Newton school board for 8 years. He also loved to be in the outdoors where he enjoyed golfing, fishing, and gardening.  

Gary will be missed and remembered by his loving wife Colleen; son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey & Michele Johnston of Troy; daughter and son-in-law Julie & Barry Willoughby of Tipp City; grandchildren Mandy Johnston of Fairborn, Joshua & Jessica Johnston of St. Paris, Tabitha & Dustin Otley of West Milton, Krystal & Steven Smith of Tipp City, Justin & Bailey Willoughby of Tipp City, Zane Willoughby of Troy, Grant Willoughby of Tipp City; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; sister Jean Butner of Trotwood. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert Johnston.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 8, at Jackson-Sarver Funeral Home, 1 S. Main Street, Pleasant Hill, with interment following at Miami Memorial Park, Covington. The family will receive friends from 9:30-11:00 AM Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Miami County.
