Larry Alan Powell
Age 61 of Pleasant Hill, went home to be with Jesus Saturday, December 8, 2018. He was born August 21, 1957, in Troy, Ohio, to his parents Jack W. & Kathryn “Pill” (Sackett) Powell. Larry graduated from Newton High School class of 1976. On July 29, 1978, he married his high school sweetheart Bonnie L. Spitler and together they shared a life for over 40 years. Larry was the founder and director of The Barn Youth Center for 23 years and later worked at Newton Schools as the Athletic Director. Larry struggled with Ankylosing Spondylitis for 30 years that caused him pain everyday; but that never stopped him from smiling and helping all those around him. He never stopped fighting his 3 ½ year battle with Metastatic Melanoma Cancer. He was a believer, a fighter, a giver, a husband, a dad, a grandfather, a friend. He was something to everyone he met. Larry left a positive impact on every person he came in contact with. He leaves behind his loving wife Bonnie Powell; children and their spouses Julie & Mike Velkoff of Pleasant Hill, Holly Powell of Troy, Jason Powell of Covington; granddaughters Kylie & Ava Velkoff; brother and sister-in-law Doug & Kim Powell of Tipp City; numerous nieces and newphews. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, December 13, at the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, 300 E. Monument Street, Pleasant Hill. Chaplain Ed Ellis will officiate with interment following at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-7 PM Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Barn Ministry, 2140 Rench Rd, Pleasant Hill or Hospice of Miami County.
